Weather Worries During Your Colorado Springs Family Photography Session

Sweet friends and this mama’s hair give me life. We met up for their family session in one of my most chosen spots in Colorado Springs for some adventuring and snuggles. I can tell that all of Lesha’s boys love her to the moon and back. What a life to live.

I love when families take a break from their busy vacation life to spend some time with me documenting the love and authentic connections they share. This family came to visit me from Missouri and braved the cold Colorado air. Colorado can be unpredictable with the weather but there is one thing that I know, regardless of what the weather was the day before, there is a 90% chance that the next day will be sunny.

I know it seems like a funny thing to write a blog post about however, questions about the weather come through my inbox often. What do we do if it rains? If it snows? For my local families, this does not pose a big issue, most likely we can move your session date to a new date and roll with it. When I work with vacationing families and couples, that question becomes a tad bit more important.

We are lucky here in Colorado Springs. I live in a unique area that is considered a high desert. What does this mean? That we get a whole lot of sunshine and warm weather nearly every day. Is it warm all day? Nope. Not even close. Most days start off a bit chilly with a nice warm-up in the middle and then back to chilly in the evening. That means that we don’t keep much of the snow we get, it melts and soaks into the ground. Up in the mountains, the snow sticks around much longer but not down here. It’s perfect. It means that more than likely, even if we JUST had a snow storm, the weather for your session is going to be good enough to make it happen still. I love it here. Colorado, you are good to me. Friends, come see me, we can explore together!

In Home Family Newborn Session in Southern Colorado

This is my second time hanging out with Miss Addison, her mama, and her daddy. This time, however, she got to introduce me to her new baby brother, Hudson. I traveled down to Canon City, Colorado to document in their home now that Hudson had arrived with a Lifestyle Newborn Session.

When I walked up to their home, I knew I wanted to grab an item from nature nearby to incorporate into the session. I asked Sarah for some scissors and snipped a few branches from their pine tree in the front yard. I could hear Addison inside talking and when they opened the door she was very excited to show me around her home.

When I arrive at a client’s home for their newborn session, I love to look around in all the rooms to find the best light. I might move things around as I did for this session in order to harness that beautiful light in the pockets I find. Don’t worry if you feel like your home doesn’t have “great light” like Sarah tried telling me. Girl! Your home has beautiful light in all the right places, so stop that noise right now! 🖤

Trusting me to come into your home is a big deal. I want to make sure that you know how much I appreciate your comfortability with me and also appreciate the authentic love I see between you and your people in your own space. Growing a family is special business. Family is what connects the world and keeps it going. Moments like these will forever be the pinnacles on which life stands.

Want to have me come hang out with you and your crew too? You can check out information on my newborn session via the button below. Come say hi!

The Importance of Extended Family Sessions

This family traveled to Colorado Springs on vacation and met with me to have an extended family session. To get everyone together and document was so lovely and important. They take a vacation each year and decided that Colorado Springs would be perfect for them this time around.

I wish that when I was a kid and my family and I got together, that we did an extended family session like this. My mom has five sisters and I have 14 cousins. Each year when I was a little girl, most of us would travel to my aunt’s home in Ohio each year for Thanksgiving. I have a bunch of home photos but I can’t remember a time when we ever did a professional session like this.

Looking back, I love those home taken photos but I think that there is just something extra special about everyone being in the frame at once. Enjoying each other’s company to the fullest and having someone else there to capture the authentic happiness a family has.

Sara, thank you for choosing me to show you your sweet family love. Thank you for trusting me with these heirloom images that your children will be able to look back on with joy when they are older. Thank you for reaching out and sharing your vision with m. Thank you for letting me bring it to life. I really appreciate you.

Friend, if you are here reading this and want to chat about your own extended family session, reach out. I am happy to help you craft a time together with me that will truly reflect the authentic nature of your family. Cousins laughing and playing. Mom/Dad (Grandma/Grandpa) watching over everything they created and you bridging that gap in between. Check out my family session information below. Deployment Family Session at Ute Valley Park

Clients book family sessions for a variety of reasons. To document birthdays, to celebrate other milestones, yearly updates to portraits for grandparents and family too. Living in a military town brings another reason to schedule a family session; deployment.

Vanessa’s husband is due to deploy soon and she wanted to document the authentic love their family shares one more time before he left for a few months. Documenting the love a family shares is so important, especially when you know you won’t see each other for an extended period of time. To have those images to look at while your loved one is far away, I can think of nothing more precious to hold in your hand.

Documenting the love a family shares is so important, especially when you know you won’t see each other for an extended period of time. To have those images to look at while your loved one is far away, I can think of nothing more precious to hold in your hand.

To prepare for their time with me, Vanessa and her sweet daughter took a trip to my home to try on some of the clothing that I have in my client closet. She also brought over clothing for the rest of her family and I helped her create a color and texture palette that worked well for the location they picked and time of year. Needless to say, they looked so good during their session! Clothing doesn’t always make or break a session but it certainly helps to create a vibe that fits the family perfectly.

Do you think it would be helpful for me to help you and your family create the perfect wardrobe for your time with me? Everyone who books with me gets exclusive access to not only my online wardrobe styling service through Style and Select, they also get to browse through the boho styled clothing I have in my client closet. I have dresses for mama and her sweet girls, rompers, and overalls for the boys, and a little bit of everything in between for styling the whole fam bam. Let’s connect and let me help ease the stress of what to wear!

Downtown Colorado Springs Siblings Session

Emily and Eli, you two are the sweetest humans and I am so glad that you picked me to document your sibling love. Eli is my daughter, Emma’s best friend. Eli is so special to me, like my own child. Can I be your surrogate mama? You can’t say no. These two peeps have got this siblinghood thing down. I mean, you cannot look through this gallery and tell me that they don’t like each other. More smiling and laughs than going to the damn amusement park.

Emily had been wanting to schedule something with Eli for a while and my daughter finally sent me a “business inquiry” for Emily, haha. I was totally down and we made it happen. I don’t typically shoot downtown Colorado Springs but this really fits them and their personalities to a T. It was perfect, just like them. Thanks for sharing your rawness with me. Your joy with me. Yourselves with me. I love you both with all my heart.

Extended Family Session at Garden of the Gods

Steven, Brandon, and Brandon’s family came down from Denver to spend an afternoon with me at Garden of the Gods for an extended family photography session near Christmas time. This session was super important to Steven and Brandon for multiple reasons.

Brandon’s grandfather had passed away and he did not have many photos with him, so capturing images with his grandmother was special and important to him. Steven and Brandon were also celebrating their 5 year wedding anniversary as well as being together for 10 years. I was so honored to be chosen to be the one who got to take this journey with them.

Their family was so full of love and grace and laughter. At one moment during their session, while admiring Brandon’s hair, I asked what the line in his haircut was called….he looked me dead in the eye and said, “a part?” I died. Haha. I laughed…and felt a tad embarrassed. Steven and Brandon were so lovely to me and I am thankful for their love. Guys, thank you for letting me be the one to show you the love you have. It means the world to me.

Extended Family Mountain View Session in Colorado Springs

Extended family sessions are something special. To see parents with their babies and them with their babies, generations in the making, it’s the sweetest thing you can imagine. I got to meet up with Lori and her bunch during their December vacation to Colorado Springs and we got to play in the mountains and explore the beauty that is Colorado.

To be honest, this is the second time I got to meet Lori and her crew. On their scheduled session date, we met up and the wind was super chilly. We walked up to where we were going to start their session and looked at each other and I knew that it wasn’t going to work. They have twin newborn babes and a tiny sweet girl and with those kiddos in tow, we just couldn’t make it work and have everyone happy.

No worries! I try my best to be flexible when it comes to our crazy Colorado weather. Most often, we can make a session still work regardless of weather, but I do try hard to take into consideration tiny babes and how they will feel during our time together. Adults can tough it out but those sweet tiny friends of mine just don’t have the capacity to “tough it out”, and that’s okay! I would love to take you and your family under my wing and give you a session experience that you will love.

Have you been thinking about a family or extended family session during your vacation to Colorado Springs? Let me help! I know all the great spots and clients even get exclusive access to my location catalog to choose their location from a list of my favorite spots around the area. Let’s chat and get something set up for you on my calendar while you are here. See you soon!

Fountain Creek Ranch Colorado Wedding Venue

The Fountain Creek Ranch is a historic wedding venue located just south of Colorado Springs. They are a new venue that launched during one of the hardest years we have had in a long time. They are still here though and I wanted to share their lovely space with you!

Alex, Daniel, their kiddos + I explored the house and grounds at the Fountain Creek Ranch on a fall day. The house was built as the Frost Family home and was lived and worked in by the Frost Family for some time. The ranch has decided to open its doors and land to host authentic Colorado weddings, lucky you!

I enjoyed the time I spent watching and hearing the kids play in the rooms and hallways. Each room holds different vibes and possibilities. The grounds of the ranch has its own flower garden which, when in full bloom, takes your breath away. The land is on the Fountain Creek as well so there are chanced to explore the creek area along with the large cottonwood trees that inhabit the land.

The Fountain Creek Ranch is hands down one of the most diverse, authentic, and beautiful wedding venues I have had the chance to hang out on in Colorado. When you visit, there could be workers tending to crops or animals. There is nothing quite like the sights of a working ranch.

If you have been thinking about having a larger destination wedding in Colorado, I recommend checking out the Fountain Creek Ranch. Matt, the event coordinator at the ranch will take care of all your wedding planning, venue and setup needs while I take care of your timeline and photography coverage. Stree free friends. That’s how your wedding should be.

Can I help you plan your day? Even if you aren’t using the Fountain Creek Ranch or a venue at all, I would love to chat with you to see what I can help you create. Be it a full-blown wedding with 6 attendants on each side or a mountain elopement with just the three of us. Let me capture the authentic love between you and your partner. Travel Lifestyle Newborn Session in Arkansas with Colorado Photographer

I was lucky enough to travel to Arkansas and spend time with this sweet family to document their new baby boy, Knight with an in-home newborn session. David and Shereka were so welcoming when I arrived at their home. They let me do my thing by finding great little pockets of light throughout their home and I think that the spots I found worked perfectly for this session.

Their home was quite dark with little natural light access. I found some light by their backdoor out of their bedroom and also in a bathroom by the window, a lovely spot in one of their older sons’ rooms that I could use, as well as a nice shaded area between their garage and house. I moved around some furniture and set it up for making use of the light that I had. It was perfect.

I used that natural light to highlight mama and babe and the bedroom in the background is turned into an afterthought with the dark lighting. We will make it work, no matter what we are working with. Promise.

Mama and Daughter Colorado Springs Mountain View Session

Maria wanted to adventure with her sweet girl Charli and have me document their mother/daughter relationship. We met in Cheyenne Canyon and let Charli lead our time together. She is an adventurous little girl and I had so much fun following her lead as we journeyed through the area.

Sessions that focus on motherhood are special to me. I have five children in this blended family of mine. Each one of them is special in their own unique way and they all whole my heart. Maria wanted our session to focus on the love she has for Charli and the love Charli has for her. I wanted their clothing to be simple so we could really allow their connection to shine through. Charli is wearing a sweet little dress from my client closet and Maria was able to find the perfect dress for her using my online styling service.

Newborn Session at Ute Valley Park

Have you ever met someone you didn’t know that just made your heart soar? This family does that to me. Sweetness to the core. Tiffany reached out to have her sweet boy Liam and her family documented. Liam had a hard landing into life and Tiff and Cam wanted to celebrate their sweet boy by documenting their first family photos.

Tiff is wearing one of my client closet dresses, my favorite one in fact. It allows the freedom of the wind to blow and create movement and feminine grace in her images with her son. Shortly into our time together, sweet Liam wanted to nurse. It was so enjoyable for me to spend time with Tiff, Cam, and Liam as Tiff gave the tiny human she held in her arms nourishment from her own body. How amazing are women that we can not only grow a person but an entirely new organ and THEN keep them alive, well-fed, with nothing more than what we already have?

This was the first outdoor newborn session that I have ever done and I will say, I truly enjoyed it. The freeness and authenticity of the mountains and air. It was magnificent and I look forward to creating more with newborns and their families in our beautiful Colorado spaces. Colorado Springs In Home Newborn Session

I got to work with Lauran and Colt for their maternity session. We traveled up a crazy rough dirt road to get to an amazing spot. We got to adventure in the mountains together. When River was born, they invited me in their home to spend time with them in their element. Their home was quiet and inviting. Such sweet humans, I could feel the vibe. Calm, ever so in love with this girl they created.

This sweet girl was ten years on the making. Lauran and Colt finally got their little girl in October and she is everything they could have dreamed of. Their authentic love for Miss River makes my heart tug in all the good place. Thank you, mama, for allowing me to follow your pregnancy journey and then meet this beautiful daughter of yours.

Mother and Daughter Family Session at Ledges State Park

When I get to shoot for myself, I almost always don’t edit the images for months. It was no different with this session for my cousin, Jenni, and her girls. Jenni is more like a sister than a cousin. Though we didn’t get close until later in life, we are thick and thieves and I love her and her heart so damn much.

I visited Iowa for the first time in years over the summer. My mother and I moved there when I was a sophomore in high school and I moved away shortly after I graduated. My mom stayed, along with a lot of my mother’s family. My cousin Jenni and her family hang their hats there too.

When we made plans to visit, the first thing I did was convince Jenni to let me photograph her and her girls in the water. This session was bucket list for me. I styled the clothing 100%. Jenni is wearing my wedding dress from the amazing We Are Reclamation. Her girls are wearing dresses that I hand-picked to go along with that dress. Jenni and her girls played barefoot in the creek, over the rocks and trees, and enjoyed each other. They let it all go. We just relaxed and I documented the love she has for those little girls and the love they have for their mama.

Thanksgiving is in two days and I have family visiting me. I have been itching to edit this session for months but kept putting it off. I had a super busy fall season and wanted to put my clients first as much as possible. Today, I woke up and realized that I needed to do something for myself too. I needed to do some creative work without pressure. I need to create just for me. Just like I did when I shot the session. No expectations. No rules. No stress. The editing was the same. It was so lovely to pick up these edits today. To put them back down to spend time with my kids and family and then sit down here and there throughout the day.

The result? The most beautiful gallery. I am proud of these and my heart just beats for Jenni right now. You are gorgeous my love.

Sometimes we have to take time for ourselves. To self-care. To renew our hearts. It makes us better in the end. It makes us more alert and confident. It allows us to refresh and recenter. I needed this today. To do something for me.

That being said, I am SUPER excited to get back to editing client sessions on Monday after my family departs back to their homes. When my home is a little quieter. When my beds are empty. When my heart is full. Until then, I am going to soak them up and finally get this gallery out to Jenni. I know she will be showing everyone in my family this blog post and her images with those babies of her. I love you Jenni. Eat some pie for me love.

Want to take an adventure with me and your sweet babes too? I would LOVE to work with you. Check out my session booking info via the button below and let’s plan time together. xo

Family Session with View of Pikes Peak

Sweet family. Sarra and her boys adventured with me in the Garden last month. Sarra and I planned out their session clothing well in advance. I ordered Harvey’s little jumper from one of my favorite Etsy shops, Dannie and Lilou. They have the most beautiful linen clothing for kiddos. They didn’t have Harvey’s size available so I reached out and they made it special, just for him.

Sarra was interested in capturing the innocence of her boys. The smallness of them. Her babies. This jumper was the perfect way to showcase that he was on the cusp of growing older, but still that small boy in Sarra’s mind. Both boys brought along with them little treasures and trinkets. Leland was proud of his glasses, Harvey, his little blue harmonica. It was special because it was them.

Colorado Springs Family Session in the Red Rocks

Living in Colorado Springs is certainly an adventure. Not only because we have the BEST views IMO but also because the turnover rate for folks coming and going is super high. We are a military town at our core. I have met so many families who end up leaving for their next duty station and it’s always such a sad thing for me. Thank goodness for social media and the ability to follow along with them, even though they aren’t here.

Being a military town also means that there are a ton of photographers who also come and go along with their families and military moves. While it is true that my husband retired from the Army a few years back, we have decided to stay here and keep living that Colorado dream.

Red Rocks Family Photography Session in Colorado Springs

I have got to hang out with Lindsey and her family for several years now. First, with tiny Craig when he was just a babe. Then to document the arrival of sweet miss Darby and now, for the last time before they moved away from our beautiful state.

Colorado Springs Maternity Family Session While on Vacation

Felicia connected with me to document her sweet family and her pregnancy while on their trip to Colorado Springs. I would say that about 40% of my clients each year are comprised of folks visiting our beautiful city and mountains. They reach out to me not only to take their photos in our beautiful landscape, but also to get insight into where to go, what to eat, and how to get the most out of their time here in Colorado. I love giving recommendations for my favorites places to eat and just helping make sure everyone has the best time they can while exploring our magnificent mountains.

Garden of the Gods Maternity Family Session

Pregnancy. What a gift. How amazing is it that women can grow a whole organ (the placenta) and ALSO grow a whole sweet babe? I can’t even wrap my head around how amazing the body is to be able to accomplish such a task. It seems like a miracle at times. I am not a religious person but the human body and creation of life makes me want to be.

Allison and her sweet family met me for a perfect night in Colorado Springs. We enjoyed each other’s company and I spent allll session trying to be friends with sweet little miss Ellie. If you scroll down the bottom of these blog post image favorites, you will see that it finally happened. Or maybe it was just the chocolate chips and first-ever Annie’s Bunny Gummy Snacks her mama gave her. Either way, I’ll take it!

Allison, as a mama to so many kiddos, I will tell you, it won’t always be easy, but it will always be worth it. Those little babes will look at you like you are their world and they certainly will complete yours.

Family Session along the Front Range in Colorado Springs

Leticia and her crew were as fun-loving and they were absolutely adorable. Her two sweet girls and her husband met me at one of my favorite new locations and we explored our hearts out. We adventured by the red rocks, on fallen cottonwood trees, snuggling up on blankets, hiking up paths, and secret staircases. It was like a fairytale.

Fall is the busiest season for a photographer and, right on cue, this fall was my busiest season I have ever had during my photography career. I love it and am so thankful for Leticia and her fam bam along with all the other families I got to hang out with over the past few months.

I am looking forward to the winter months and the calm it brings with being an outdoor photographer. I know I will be booking less, so that makes me a tad sad, but I also know that Colorado weather is pretty awesome still in the winter so I am also looking forward to some amazing chilly weather sessions in the next few months!

Are you looking to book a winter session? I would love to hang with you and your family. Click the button below to check out my family session info and see if booking a session with me is right for you and yours! See you soon!

Lake George Fall Family Session

I have been waiting to deliver this session for what seems like ages. I met Sarah at a Tuesday Together networking meeting. During this meeting, she said she really wished she could meet other local photographers who would actually be her friend and have it be genuinely real. I look at her, gave her my card, and said, “I’ll be your friend!”. The rest is history and what has really only been a few months but has seemed like a lifetime.

Fall Family Session in Lake George Colorado

Ugh. My heart.

Sarah, her husband Matt, and their two boys Elliott and Ezra are like extensions of my own family. Always there to lend an ear or a hand. I want them to know right now, they don’t fully understand the gravity of my love and adoration for them. I feel thankful to have met such a bright, smart, selfless, caring, and soulful mama that I now get to call my friend.

This place is so special to them and I am glad that we made the drive up to Lake George to explore in a place that they, one day, want to call home. Watching the boys run and play on the boulders and through the grass by the water was magical and a much needed break for me. I felt like I could just create during my time with them. They trusted me to just do my thing and the results speak for themselves.

Sarah, babe, here are just a handful from your that gallery of family images WITH YOU IN THE FRAME you have been waiting for. I love you to the bottom of my heart girl. Enjoy!

Friends, if you are here for these beautiful images and are wondering how you can get on my books too, just click the button below and let’s make it happen. Your kids are only kids for 18 short years. Let’s make the most of the time you have left.
