Ute Valley Colorado Springs Family Session

Laura and her crew (pups too) came and hung out with me after a long time of waiting. We had to reschedule their family session at Ute Valley Park several times due to weather and changing schedules and all the things that come with doing this thing called life. Sometimes that happens, friends. Life gets in the way of doing the things that we want to do, the things we should do, and everything in between.

It has been a while since I’ve blogged anything. If I am being honest, it is because I lack what to say, dear friends. Life has been hard lately. Hard af. I’m in spaces I didn’t think I would be in again. Dealing with changes to life and family. Those things are delicate and figuring them out is like walking a tightrope that has a little too much slack in it when you need it to be solid. So, we do what we do, and we struggle with the end in sight, even if the end is too far to reach out and grasp. It is there. It is always there. Right?

So, with my lack of words, here I am, trying to get some beauty out in the world that was created with my hands, my mind, and my heart. This sweet family connected and I was there to witness it. The struggle of being a family. The struggle of pets, of kids, of things we can’t see on the surface. I am struggling too, but, I am here. I will continue to be here. Coming out of my shell slowly. Dipping my toes into the turbulent waters of life inch by inch until I can either learn to swim in the wreck or the sea gives me mercy. Either way, I am here.

Creating Space for Authentic Play is Important during Your Family Photography Session

This family session at Ute Valley Park in Colorado Springs was extra special. I rarely get inquiries from single dads to take photos with their kids. Being so, I wanted to break that weirdness of dudes getting photos with their babes! I asked Matt and his boys if they wanted to hang out with me and they said yes (obviously!).

On their way to meet with me, Matt sent me a message that they were running a little bit late and that one of the guys was less than happy (he had a bad day at school). Friends, I want to take a moment to let you know that this scenario is one that happens. It happens to the most prepared, well-rested, loves the camera and outside kids. It happens no matter what sometimes because one kid (I have one myself) doesn’t want to leave the house. They would rather dieeeeeee than go anywhere.

So, I am thinking, I need to tell you something else. Sometimes the road to get someplace can be rocky but I promise, when you get to where you are going with me, it’s going to hit different for those small ones. The look in their eyes when they are allowed to jump in the grass and climb on top of a rock is something you couldn’t have asked for them to do, it just happens. Creating space for organic play and authentic connection is where my heart always is and kids can feel it, I just know they can.

Here is what’s up. What happened with Matt and his boys has happened before to you or you are afraid that it will, this bit of writing was for you. Don’t be scared. It will all work out. Soon, they will forget why they were mad or unhappy AND it also helps if they have treats to look forward to after our time together (or during a break during our time together too!). Don’t hold back on scheduling your family session. Bring the kids, let’s get images like the ones Matt has to hold (scroll below and check out the slideshow above). I can’t wait to hang with you and your crew!

Maternity and Newborn Sessions Document Your Growing Family

Hanging out with families for both their maternity and newborn sessions is such a sweet thing for me. I get to follow along with your pregnancy journey and document that sweet love right from the start. Andrea and her family met me last year during my fall mini sessions. Their little boy Findlay was shy to start but I found a way to break through to his tender heart. Look at him now, a big brother.

When families book me for both their maternity and their newborn session, I love to give a discount on both sessions. It is my way of saying thank you for wanting to work with me through the seasons in your life. Rewarding in my heart of hearts, when those sweet babes are born, it is magic.

Family Session at Ute Valley Park in Colorado Springs

Lacie, Mike, and their tiny babe James hung out with me for their family session over at Ute Valley Park. This park, located in Colorado Springs offers such a variety of spaces to shoot in and explore. I got the venture to some new spaces with this sweet fam bam and I could have not been more excited.

Last year, I had a drawing for a free family session, I drew not one name, but three names! Lacie was one of them and it was so special to see the love of their family. Lacie and her husband Mike own A Grazing Life, a Colorado-based organization that offers farm-to-table dinners, which is pretty amazing! Farm fresh food, harvested in the place where you dine. I can’t imagine anything better.

Colorado Springs Branding Session

Dawn reached out to me a few weeks back wanting to do a branding session for her new photography business, Dawn Autumn Photography with me. Dawn and I met when I look my kids to the Great Wolf Lodge a few years back. She was helping us with our time there and we got to chatting about photography. I gave her my card and we have stayed in touch since.

I have watched Dawn grow in her photography journey. Last year around this time, she booked a mentorship with me and we talked over technical things she was having trouble with, we ate some delicious pizza together, and then we photographed a beautiful family side by side. Afterward, we worked on some editing techniques and I have been in contact with Dawn on and off checking in on her and her growth.

Dawn is ready. She is ready to step out into the photography business world and put her name in the hat to do some amazing stuff! Her main focus is going to be still life and landscape photography with a little bit of portrait work in there every now and then. I support her and her goals and know she will do well.

Dawn, thank you for not only trusting me with providing you your photography mentorship but also for taking that dedicated leap into this wonderful world of entrepreneurship and documenting what your heart loves. I know you are going to do well and I can’t wait to keep watching it happen.

Deployment Family Session at Ute Valley Park

Clients book family sessions for a variety of reasons. To document birthdays, to celebrate other milestones, yearly updates to portraits for grandparents and family too. Living in a military town brings another reason to schedule a family session; deployment.

Vanessa’s husband is due to deploy soon and she wanted to document the authentic love their family shares one more time before he left for a few months. Documenting the love a family shares is so important, especially when you know you won’t see each other for an extended period of time. To have those images to look at while your loved one is far away, I can think of nothing more precious to hold in your hand.

Documenting the love a family shares is so important, especially when you know you won’t see each other for an extended period of time. To have those images to look at while your loved one is far away, I can think of nothing more precious to hold in your hand.

To prepare for their time with me, Vanessa and her sweet daughter took a trip to my home to try on some of the clothing that I have in my client closet. She also brought over clothing for the rest of her family and I helped her create a color and texture palette that worked well for the location they picked and time of year. Needless to say, they looked so good during their session! Clothing doesn’t always make or break a session but it certainly helps to create a vibe that fits the family perfectly.

Do you think it would be helpful for me to help you and your family create the perfect wardrobe for your time with me? Everyone who books with me gets exclusive access to not only my online wardrobe styling service through Style and Select, they also get to browse through the boho styled clothing I have in my client closet. I have dresses for mama and her sweet girls, rompers, and overalls for the boys, and a little bit of everything in between for styling the whole fam bam. Let’s connect and let me help ease the stress of what to wear!

Front Range Pikes Peak Couples Session

I used to think that if you fought in your marriage, that you didn’t have a good one. This was because I wasn’t taught what marriage truly looked like. It has taken me YEARS (I am 34) to finally figure out that marriage is so much more than what I thought it was. It is respect and fighting with respect. It is love and fighting with love. It is agreeing and disagreeing and all the things in between. What makes a marriage is not perfection or bliss. It’s the desire to stay with the one that stole your heart and choosing them. Every. Single. Day.

Couples Session near Pikes Peak on the Front Range

This space is quickly becoming a new favorite. Those white rocks, beautiful field, and amazing mountain views are breathing life back into my soul. Shelley and Matt reached out to me to document their wedding anniversary. With this past year, they wanted to treat themselves to a well-deserved token of their love, and I was there for it.

Can we talk for a minute about how hard marriage is? I know that most people will lie straight to your face and tell you that “if you marry the right person, it’s easy”. I am here to tell you that they are just saying that so they don’t have to speak the truth. Marriage requires work, all of the time. The key to remaining in a relationship that you truly love and care about is communication.

Folks, communication can be a hard thing to master, if you ever do it at all. I will tell you this though, give yourself grace, and know, just because someone else’s marriage looks peachy on the outside, we all have our moments. I will also tell you that those moments don’t lessen the love you share with the keeper of your soul.

Whew, that was a bit deeper than I thought I was going to get tonight but I think that I needed to say those words. For all the couples that made it through the dumpster fire of 2020, give yourself a giant pat on the back, kiss your sweetheart with passion, and go buy yourself something nice. You earned it.

Speaking of buying yourself something nice, wanna get together and document that steamy love you share with your babe? I wanna take your picture in 2021 (and 2022 and 2023 and allll the times after that!). Hit me up! Drop a note to say hi and let’s journey together. I want to document your authenticity and show you that love tangibly. Click that button below for booking info. See ya!

Newborn Session at Ute Valley Park

Have you ever met someone you didn’t know that just made your heart soar? This family does that to me. Sweetness to the core. Tiffany reached out to have her sweet boy Liam and her family documented. Liam had a hard landing into life and Tiff and Cam wanted to celebrate their sweet boy by documenting their first family photos.

Tiff is wearing one of my client closet dresses, my favorite one in fact. It allows the freedom of the wind to blow and create movement and feminine grace in her images with her son. Shortly into our time together, sweet Liam wanted to nurse. It was so enjoyable for me to spend time with Tiff, Cam, and Liam as Tiff gave the tiny human she held in her arms nourishment from her own body. How amazing are women that we can not only grow a person but an entirely new organ and THEN keep them alive, well-fed, with nothing more than what we already have?

This was the first outdoor newborn session that I have ever done and I will say, I truly enjoyed it. The freeness and authenticity of the mountains and air. It was magnificent and I look forward to creating more with newborns and their families in our beautiful Colorado spaces. Are you pregnant and looking for that perfect photographer to share your babes first moments with? Let’s chat about how I can make these memories last a lifetime and beyond.

Ute Valley Park Colorado Springs Family Photography Session

Adventure and soul are the things that drive me to create. When I thought about having a session here, I was excited again. I was renewed. Leslie and her family explored, adventured and loved on each other in the fields by the mountains and we had the best time as you can see from their gorgeous gallery and slideshow.

Family Photography Session in Colorado Springs at Ute Valley Park

This location is one of my favorites. It used to be one I hated to go to, then I got creative. I had a few clients request that we use this space and it forced me to revisit it and look at the location through a new lens. I needed to re-find the beauty that I couldn’t see.

I came here a few months ago with my daughter to check it out again. I always see photographers shooting here, however, I hardly see them walking more than 100 feet from the parking lot. I want to adventure with my clients so naturally, I went deeper into the park. I found a beautiful rocky space that was hidden in the trees.

Do you want to go on an adventure with your family and have me document your time together?

Can I capture your love?

Boho Family Mountain View Session in Colorado Springs

I love that part of this job. To be someone’s family photographer. To build and foster relationships with my clients. If you want a photographer that really knows you and your kids, I am your girl. I feel that when I get to know my family’s better, I can document their story better.

I send all of my clients a questionnaire before our time together to better understand their family dynamic and, more importantly, their why. Your why is the heart and soul of our time together and it creates a feeling of warmth and love, even though we just met.

Colorado Springs Mountain View Family Session

I have gotten to hang out with this family three times now, each time thinking “I will never top that” and each time being pleasantly surprised that it was more before than the time before. I have gotten to watch little Miss Annie and her sister Edith grow and their personalities change.

Family Session Mentorship Shoot Along in Colorado Springs

Alex and her family were so sweet to model for a shoot along mentorship session with a budding photographer here in Colorado Springs. The process for my family shoot along mentorships involves choosing a family together. From creating the model call graphic and posts to the final selection, mentees are with me every step of the process. There were so many beautiful families that reached out. We ultimately chose the Miller family because they had 3 children, a boy and two girls. Their family was what my mentee was looking for, big with lots of opportunity for interaction and play. They were also perfect for what I look for to capture and teach during the mentorship.

My family session shoot along mentorships focus on harnessing connection, authenticity, and adventure within families. We worked together to help our client style clothing with the use of Style & Select’s online wardrobe styling services (pssst…if you use this code, WILDPRAIRIE10, you’ll get 10% off your first year, hoorah!) and reviewed clothing choices together to help our client look their best. Alex was so super sweet and flexible when it came to clothing and I appreciated her willingness to create a session of my mentee’s dreams. Their family is gorgeous and their clothing choice created a classic and timeless look for their final gallery as you can see in the slideshow above and a handful of my favorites from their session below.
