Fostering a Connection with your Photographer, and Why it’s Important

Having a connection with your photographer is important, friends. Creating rapport and a comfort level that feels good is something that should be strived for. This helps me, your photographer, document your authentic moments, naturally. Connecting with your photographer also allows them to understand your vision for the session and what’s important to you. I truly believe that the more you get to know the person documenting your heart, the better experience overall you are likely to have. I want to document your essence and tell your story through your gallery. Period.

When you have a connection with your photographer, they will be able to understand what you are trying to highlight and will be able to provide you with a gallery that reflects that. For me, the perfect gallery should be able to not only capture the physical details of our time together but also the emotions and personalities of your children that you know and love so well. When looking for a photographer, it is important to find someone who you feel comfortable with and can trust to create with you and document your authentic love and connection.

Enter me, Hello! I want to be a part of your life. I want to come to birthday parties and celebrations for your kids. I want to cheer you on as you finish your degree. I want to go out and have a drink when you accomplish something amazing in your life. Hit. Me. Up. Courtney, Jeremey, Cayden, Rylen, and Parker are some of my favorite people in the world. I met them when Cayden was just one and I have had the opportunity to follow along with their lives and growing family. Court, your babies are absolutely the sweetest part of life, my friend. I love and am thankful that you continue to include me in your yearly photos and that I get to experience your friendship outside of “work life”. Love you girl!

Anyway, enough of that mush stuff. The point I am trying to make is that whoever you choose as your photographer, be it me or someone else, connect with them. Make sure your photographer values you as a person and listens to your stories and experiences. I promise it is handy when we get to spend time with you in front of our lens. We can see your soul and the more context we have, the more beautiful it can become. So, can I get to know you and your family? Will you share your stories with me?

Wintery Garden of the Gods Anniversary Session

This is the second time I got to connect with Madeline and Nick, this time for an anniversary session in Garden of the Gods. Super special friends. Thank you for letting me part of your trip once again up from Arkansas. One day we will get to hang out on your turf and you can show me all the cool places around where you live. Let’s plan a date!

One of the many things that I love about this photography gig is that no two sessions are ever the same. Every couple is unique and brings their own personality to our time together. While every season has its own benefits, I have to say, I love winter sessions, they are a close second to fall. There's just something so beautiful about snow during a couples session. It adds a layer of magic and romance to the photos. Plus, it's the perfect excuse to bundle up in cozy clothes and snuggle close to your bae. If you're considering booking a session, don’t let the fact that it’s winter stop you. Photographing couples in the snow can be a challenge, but with a little bit of effort, you can create some beautiful images.

We know that in most cases, when the weather forecast predicts snow, people either cancel their photo session or reschedule to a later date. However, if you have a travel photography session scheduled like Madeline and Nick did with me, don't let a little snow stop you from getting great images! Just be sure to dress appropriately and take along a few extra blankets and snacks in case you get stuck somewhere because snacks are life and your car can run a surprisingly long time at idle with a full tank of fuel.

When you're heading out for a photography session, there are a few things you can do to help keep the shoot going even when there's snow on the ground. One thing to keep in mind is that photographing in winter weather can be challenging, but with a bit of prepping you can make the most of the situation. Here are a few tips for keeping your session going without you (or your photographer) freezing their tushies off:

- Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather. Layers are key, as you'll want to be able to adjust your clothing as needed.
- Pack extra warm clothes and accessories, just in case you get cold. A hat, scarf, and gloves are all essential items to have on hand.
- Hand and toe warmers are not something to scoff at friends. They work and they work well. Bring them along or ask your photographer if they have a few extra handy.

P.S. Photographer friends, make sure your gear is sealed (body and lens) because trust me, you don’t want to find out later that they weren’t. Insert sad face here.
Extra Tip: If you're traveling to a location with harsh winter weather, especially here in Colorado, be sure you check road and traffic conditions before you head out and be aware of any road closures and tire chain up/ 4x4 requirements.

So, are you finding yourself traveling to Colorado in the winter/early springtime or just during that random ass day in April where it snows two feet? I got you. Let’s make magic together, regardless of the weather. See you soon, friends.

Three Reasons You Should Book Your Maternity and Newborn Sessions Together

Erin and Bobby met with me for both their maternity and their newborn sessions. We explored Cheyenne Canyon for their maternity session and then snuggled up in their home for my time with baby Sawyer. I love working with clients through their life stories. Engagement, wedding, maternity, newborn, family, and then back through the cycle with each new babe. Seeing their family change and grow. From being madly in love to seeing how amazing your partner is at growing a whole person (and an organ, thank you), to holding that babe in your arms, to chasing them around on the mountainside, I want to be there for it all. I want to build that relationship with you. It’s not just about photography. It’s about your heart (and mine).

Let me tell you a story about this girl. This sweet mama here. She booked her newborn session with me and I was so excited to see babe when they arrived. Fast forward to a few months after she booked the newborn session, her husband, Bobby, reached out to me. Turns out Erin tried to take her own maternity photos and it just wasn’t what she envisioned. Bobby wanted to know if I could sneak them in last minute. Yasssssssss is almost always my answer when its past clients (I also did their couples photos) AND babies are involved because I love them so.

Bobby let me know that he wanted to surprise Erin with this session and we met up at a Starbucks and he picked up a gift card. Fast forward to our session, Erin got to wear a beautiful dress I had just picked up from Reclamation Design and she wore it like a damn queen with that mama's belly and her gorgeous hair (I am just a tad jealous). It was nice to catch up with them both during this time together and also via their video call to prepare to come to their home for their newborn session. All of the extra time together just made it that much more special and natural for me when sweet Sawyer arrived.

Okay, I did say I would give ya’ll three reasons you should book your maternity and newborn session together….here they are:

  1. You get to foster a relationship with someone who is going to be getting pretty intimate with you during your newborn session. It is so nice to be able to get to know them beforehand (it’s nice for me to get to know you too!!)

  2. You can be confident that you will get the same quality of service and the same style of images from your photographer. Hello, super pretty wall art spreads!

  3. You get a discount! When you book your sessions together, the photographer most likely will offer you a discount (I do, you can request a proposal below to check out the details).

Super easy list of some things you might not think matter but I promise, connecting with the person who is documenting your connection is the best way to get those “feel good” images that evoke emotion and depth in your soul. I would love to work through your life journey with you. Want to share those moments with me so I can give them back to you in a gallery you will love? Let’s connect!

Creating Space for Authentic Play is Important during Your Family Photography Session

This family session at Ute Valley Park in Colorado Springs was extra special. I rarely get inquiries from single dads to take photos with their kids. Being so, I wanted to break that weirdness of dudes getting photos with their babes! I asked Matt and his boys if they wanted to hang out with me and they said yes (obviously!).

On their way to meet with me, Matt sent me a message that they were running a little bit late and that one of the guys was less than happy (he had a bad day at school). Friends, I want to take a moment to let you know that this scenario is one that happens. It happens to the most prepared, well-rested, loves the camera and outside kids. It happens no matter what sometimes because one kid (I have one myself) doesn’t want to leave the house. They would rather dieeeeeee than go anywhere.

So, I am thinking, I need to tell you something else. Sometimes the road to get someplace can be rocky but I promise, when you get to where you are going with me, it’s going to hit different for those small ones. The look in their eyes when they are allowed to jump in the grass and climb on top of a rock is something you couldn’t have asked for them to do, it just happens. Creating space for organic play and authentic connection is where my heart always is and kids can feel it, I just know they can.

Here is what’s up. What happened with Matt and his boys has happened before to you or you are afraid that it will, this bit of writing was for you. Don’t be scared. It will all work out. Soon, they will forget why they were mad or unhappy AND it also helps if they have treats to look forward to after our time together (or during a break during our time together too!). Don’t hold back on scheduling your family session. Bring the kids, let’s get images like the ones Matt has to hold (scroll below and check out the slideshow above). I can’t wait to hang with you and your crew!

Finding the Perfect Location in Rocky Mountain National Park

The trip to Rocky Mountain National Park was fueled by a family session referral from another local photographer. I got to meet up with Sarah and her family in the mountains because the super sweet Katie Mitzelfelt of Katie Mitz Photo (go check her out because she is amazing!) recommended me. Thanks, friend!

This was a last-minute addition to my schedule and I had only been to Rocky Mountain a handful of times before but knew the area I wanted to shoot in fairly well. With COVID and all the capacity limitations that came along with it in the summer of 2021, I was lucky that sunset was later in the evening so I could get to where I needed to be without a permit, which was pretty damn awesome.

My daughter, Emma, and I left early so I could scout out the perfect spot for their extended family that would be doable for everyone and still looks amazing. Emma and I stopped at a few locations along our way but they weren’t it. When I find a location that is “it” I get super giddy and excited. I will literally jump up and down and run around thinking of all the things that I can do within the space. Serious. Ask her.

When we arrived at this spot, I walked down to the water and that was it. Perfect light, perfect banks, perfect spaces to hide from the sun, and what I could have guessed was going to be beautiful light as the sun faded behind the mountains. I mean, was I wrong?

Looking to adventure with a family photographer? Don’t know exactly where you want to go? No worries, I got you! I offer a robust location catalog for my clients and personal assistance with location scouting and all the things. I would love to find the perfect spot for you and your crew. You know, one I jump up and down in when I find it because I am so excited, and then, adventure in it! Let’s connect and explore.

Romantic Rocky Mountain Elopement

These high school sweethearts (and their pup, Penny) adventured with me near Rocky Mountain National Park for their private elopement ceremony. Sav and Casey wanted their raw, emotional, and tearful moments to be something they could look back on in the future. They knew that these moments, the ones where they express their lifelong devotion to each other could not be something that they could document on their own. Enter me. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve shared what I have been creating over here at Wild Prairie Photography and this elopement really ticked all my “dream session” boxes so I figured what better way to break back into the habit than with this.

The light, the wardrobe, the hair, the smiles, and the insanely bright love that came through during our time together was nothing short of magical. Sav had been doing some searching for the perfect elopement location for her and Casey. During the planning process, Sav and I talked about quite a few options and landed on this spot. I had never been to this particular location before so I was eager to check out a new spot and look at all the pretty mountainy things along the way.

The adventure was worth the 3-hour drive, friends. Breathtaking scenery along the way that included creeks, mountains, basins, cliffs, plains, pretty much allll the things. Sometimes, it’s not all about the destination, ya know? Then sometimes, you have a killer journey AND the destination is insane. Which just so happens to be this spot. I am lucky. Lucky that Sav wanted something, not on my location catalog. They wanted to step outside the boundaries and truly adventure, freezing alpine lake water and all.

Are you planning an elopement or want to hang out with me just because? I would love to talk locations and work together to find the perfect spot for you and your babe. Perfect like this one. Perfect for you. Let’s hang?

Sunrise Elopement in Saguaro National Park

Elizabeth, Matthew, and ALL of your family thank you. Thank you for bringing me to Arizona to photograph your sunrise elopement in the Saguaros. Thank you for showing me around your amazing little town of Patagonia. Thank you for the evening we spent in the San Rafael Valley. Thank you for the good food. Thank you for the friendship and kindness. Thank you for it all. I felt truly welcome in the space that you call “home” and I would gladly adventure back in a heartbeat.

Elizabeth and Matthew hail from a small town close to the Mexico border. They flew me down to spend the weekend with them and their families for a celebration of their marriage. Elizabeth is a queen and so is her mom. Seriously. Last year, we were supposed to be doing all of this but COVID wouldn’t stand for it. This year, it was on.

To start my trip, I ventured into the San Rafael Valley to scout out the perfect spot for their sunset session the next evening. This scouting trip involved a tiny car, miles of dirt roads, an amazing sunset, a Mexico border fence, and an interaction with Border Patrol. Yes, I got pulled over. Yes, they searched my rental car for bodies and drugs, to which, I had neither. Thankfully, haha. In the end, they were nice and it was a once (I hope) in a lifetime experience for me. By the end of the evening, I had found a great location AND had a great story to tell. I. Was. Winning.

Later that evening, I ended up back at Elizabeth’s parents home in Patagonia. They invited me to stay for dinner and Elizabeth’s dad was cooking on the smoker so obviously, I could not say no. Oh. My. Goodness. Talk about some beautiful food. I mean it. The only way to describe the taste was that it was beautiful. I sat around their family dinning table and ate dinner with them. I got to know them and just just for the few hours that we were together shooting. I have to say, I prefer it that way. Can all the lovely people I work with just invite me over already? I want to be your friend!

The morning of their wedding party, we met for their sunrise elopement at Saguaro National Park. We are talking 5:45 am sunrise and they had an hour drive to get there! Looking back, I am sorry friends. Haha. But, also, not too sorry. The images we got that morning are some of my all time favorites. The way the sun pours over the mountains and hits everything just right. It was perfectly perfect and I am thankful that I got to take part in the magic.

The only way to create a gallery of images that truly reflects your love is to have someone taking the journey with you that is after those types of moments. That’s me. Hi! Can we hang? It will be worth it. I promise. Don’t believe me, take a look below at the love Elizabeth and Matthew share. The proof is in the pudding babe.

Why Having an Engagement Session with Your Wedding Photographer is Important

When a couple reaches out to me to book me for their wedding, the first thing on my mind is, when can we meet? It is important for you to get to know your wedding photographer and you can do that by booking an engagement session with them too and that is just what Caroline and Tommy did. Your wedding photographer is spending quite a bit of time with you on your wedding day, it makes sense to make sure you vibe together well. An engagement session (along with pre-wedding meetings) helps create a feeling of trust with your photographer and them with you.

For Tommy and Caroline, including Caroline’s son, Gabe, in their engagement session was something that meant a lot to both of them. I get questions from clients often who book an engagement session asking if their children can join. My answer will always be yes! My own family is a blended family so I truly understand the feelings surrounding not leaving anyone out. Sometimes I hear worries of it being more of a family session and less of a celebration of your love. Please don’t worry about that part. It is easy to create space and time for your engagement photos as well as document the love you have for your whole family during our time together. I got you!

Katie was open about her location and let me choose. I had done some recent hiking with a friend who I adore (I am looking at you Tab) and when we walked into this location, my jaw dropped. Full of blooming yuca plants at the time, I knew this would be a new location that my clients and I would come to love. I took my family here a few weeks prior and it was just what I wanted in a new location. It did not disappoint. Sweeping range views, wildflowers, and a variety of interesting landscapes. Perfectly beautiful.

Want to check out a new location with me and document that sweet growing baby bump too? I would love to plan your maternity session with you and find a location that sings to your heart. Let’s hang?

Garden of the Gods Micro Wedding

This sweet couple and their friends and family traveled in from all over to witness their union during their Micro Wedding at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I live in Colorado Springs so I visit Garden of the Gods almost weekly. You know what that means? I have the best inside scoop on where the less crowded spots are in the park, that’s right, no fighting those crowds when I help you plan your evening at the Garden.

Can you believe that I spent my first 5 years in Colorado NEVER shooting at Garden of the Gods unless it was a sunrise session? I don’t do crowds when I shoot. You can’t get that authenticity that you can from being alone with the one you love. Waiting to take turns at “hot spots” around the park, trying to find parking, battling with tourists and allll the people. Nope. not in to it.

So, one day, my daughter and I decided to do some location scouting. I was bored of all the places that I had been shooting at and wanted something fresh to bring to the table for my clients. Garden of the Gods was always a hot request and I wanted to figure out how to get it done, but on my terms. We got to looking on Google Earth (guys….this tool is so good) and found a trail that I thought might be a good candidate for what I was looking for. Bingo. It was perfect and my clients and I enjoy pressure free time together in the beautiful red rock often.

Do you want to hang out with me in a new spot? I discover new to me locations often and love the excitement of exploring the space and creating an authentic gallery of images for the babes I work with. Let’s hang?

Sunset Elopement at Garden of the Gods and The Pinery at the Hill

Kenzie and Kody chose me to be their elopement photographer after we had a lunch date at a local restaurant. They were in town checking out The Pinery at the Hill and wanted to meet with me to see how we fit. I loved them right from the start. Kenzie has the sweetest, kindest personality and it really showed.

I had never shot an elopement at The Pinery at the Hill (I had, however, covered a few non-wedding events there) and I was excited to be able to use the space. Their patio, where Kenzie and Kody exchanged vows, has the perfect afternoon sunset mountain light. Check out the images below to see what I mean.

Kenzie and Kody still wanted to showcase those Colorado mountains a bit more so after their ceremony, I swept them away with me for some intimate couples photos over at Garden of the Gods. We were short on time so we visited a location that is generally too crowded for me. I must have had all my karma coming back to me at once because when we got there, parking was a breeze and everyone just seemed to disappear from wherever we roamed on the rocks. Perfect evening.

Kenzie, babe, thank you for trusting in me to deliver you a gallery full of images that authentically capture the way you and Kody love each other. I could not have asked for a sweet couple or a sweeter family to spend my evening with. Congrats babes!

Eloping? Want me to hang out with you while you do it? Love what you see here? Just want to chat? Send me a message and let’s get the conversation started. I would LOVE to connect!

Why Elopements and Micro Weddings are Gaining Popularity

Whew, what a beautiful day these two had over at the Fountain Creek Ranch for their Micro Wedding Day. The Fountain Creek Ranch hosted a day of Micro Weddings in May and they were simply perfect. Beautiful couples who celebrated their love for each other in front of their family and friends.

COVID created a change in the wedding industry. Before, it was “expected” that you would have a giant wedding that cost $$$. Now, couples are more open to having a small affair with few guests and in some cases, no guests at all. Elopements or Micro weddings such as this one are a perfect way to create that symbolic moment with your love, without all the stress of a big wedding.

It is kind of genius really, for those who are dreading being around all those people (hello introvert or anyone with social anxiety, I see you) we now have an option to take that won’t offend anyone because…everyone else is doing it too! Notice I said “we”? Yep, me too, friends. I don’t like big gatherings much. I love my people but I can get overwhelmed quickly. That is why I eloped too. You can check out all those love here.

So, there you have it. Small weddings and elopements are the “cool” thing to do right now, so, let’s do it! I can help you find a great venue (The Fountain Creek Ranch is pretty rad, just saying) or a Colorado location that takes your breath away. Looking to elope some place else? Can I come too? But seriously, I am a happy traveler and would LOVE to adventure with you someplace new!

First Birthday Session at Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Sweet little Henry. How lucky are you to have such doting parents? This tiny man, his family, and I, spent an evening together exploring one of their favorite spaces for a first birthday family session. Brie mentioned a lovely bench at Red Rock Canyon Open Space that they would love to adventure to, and that’s just what we did!

Henry was so curious about everything around him and I was living for it. I love to let littles take the lead during our time together. I talk about this often when I have my pre-session video calls with my clients.

During those calls, a lot of parents express worry about their littles losing their minds during a session and I totally get it. I have five kiddos and I know first hand that kids sometimes don’t do the things we think or expect they will, they turn that ish on its head and do their own thing. You know what though? I love it. Authentically.

The moments that your children are truly themselves, that is what you want to remember, am I right? The curious look in their eyes when they look at insects or rocks on the ground. The contagious laughter that bounds out of their bellies when you adventure along with them in the mountains. Those are the authentic moments that really matter.

Do you want to document your authenticity? I do. Let’s chat and curate a session from start to finish that will allow you and your family to open up and connect.

Maternity and Newborn Sessions Document Your Growing Family

Hanging out with families for both their maternity and newborn sessions is such a sweet thing for me. I get to follow along with your pregnancy journey and document that sweet love right from the start. Andrea and her family met me last year during my fall mini sessions. Their little boy Findlay was shy to start but I found a way to break through to his tender heart. Look at him now, a big brother.

When families book me for both their maternity and their newborn session, I love to give a discount on both sessions. It is my way of saying thank you for wanting to work with me through the seasons in your life. Rewarding in my heart of hearts, when those sweet babes are born, it is magic.

Family Session at Ute Valley Park in Colorado Springs

Lacie, Mike, and their tiny babe James hung out with me for their family session over at Ute Valley Park. This park, located in Colorado Springs offers such a variety of spaces to shoot in and explore. I got the venture to some new spaces with this sweet fam bam and I could have not been more excited.

Last year, I had a drawing for a free family session, I drew not one name, but three names! Lacie was one of them and it was so special to see the love of their family. Lacie and her husband Mike own A Grazing Life, a Colorado-based organization that offers farm-to-table dinners, which is pretty amazing! Farm fresh food, harvested in the place where you dine. I can’t imagine anything better.

He was at home in the rocks and trails, we made the most of our evening together. Want to hang out with me too? Let’s connect and do something rad together.

Rocky Mountain Pregnancy Reveal Family Session

Sweet Janine and her beautiful family. I got to work with them when their baby girl Mia was born. I just fell in love with the way they love their kids. Janine and I talk often and I just feel so thankful to be in their lives. She sent me an IG message telling me that she was pregnant AND that she wanted to capture the reaction of her husband.

We checked out a new location for me (I love this spot so much!) and Janine and Zach adventured with their babes on the trails near Cheyenne Mountain. I love that they let their babes run and play and they really follow their lead. My favorite way to have a family session!

Towards the end of their time with me, Janine whispered in her sweet boy’s ear that she was pregnant, he whispered it to his brother, and then they told their daddy. It was a first for me and such a great moment to be a part of. Can I do this all day every day? Okay, mama’s, give me a call when you want to surprise your bae, I’ll be right there, haha. But seriously, let’s chat!

Santa Fe New Mexico Couples Adventure Session

These two babes. We met through some mutual friends and while on a camping trip outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. I had the joy to document their sweet love in this amazing space. Tall cliffs all around, quiet, desolate, perfect. I had been here before and had been dreaming of photographing a couple here for some time. Hunter and Alex made all my dreams come true with their authentic love.

Large Family Session in Lake George Colorado

It’s not often that I get to photograph a family this large with such a tight connection. Kaitlyn and Thomas, along with their crew of 8 beautifully soulful children joined me in Lake George for an adventure by the water.

I was lucky enough to meet Kaitlyn through my connections at The Fountain Creek Ranch. Their wedding day at the ranch is going to be the most amazing day. I include an engagement session with my wedding coverage and when we met and I saw all those beautiful faces, I just knew we needed to include these kids in their engagement session too! So, engagement session turned family session turned OMG how is my life this lucky session (for me at least, haha).

Kaitlyn and Thomas, look at this beautiful family you have built together. Piece by piece. Through all the steps in life that brought you to this moment. Good and bad. Rough and sad. Sometimes glorious and often times not, this was the reason. I am a firm believer in karma, fate, and serendipity. Our pasts are but a mirage in the far-off distance and the future is bright and clear and warm. Your blended family fits together like it was always meant to be and I am lucky that I get to see that with my own eyes. Thank you for that peek into your love.

Whew, okay, I may or may not have teared up a tiny bit writing that. Kaitlyn deserves all the best and kind words because honest to goodness, she is a light. These clients I meet change me and craft me, day by day, into the person that I have and will continue to evolve into. You pour out what you put in right?

Are you here reading this and feel like we made a connection and haven’t even met yet? I am guessing that you are a sweet soul that loves your children with all your might. You want to dance in the rain and are down for a healthy mix of snuggles and adventure. You want that authentic connection to show through in your image gallery. Me too.

Eleven Mile State Park Adventure Family Session

Danica is a local birth photographer and it was such an honor to document the love her family shares during their session with me. I have gotten to work with Danica and her crew before when I was making a branding film ages ago. They were so sweet and perfect then, just as they are now. These two are parents who are connected to their babes and truly lead by example (well, most days, haha).

We traveled into the mountains to one of my favorites spots at Eleven Mile State Park and explored this glorious, nature-filled space together. My little friends brought along their binoculars, and their free spirits and we chased the sun and each other all evening. It was the best and I was totally there for it.

This year, I want to travel and meet clients in all the beautiful places in Colorado and beyond. Each year I get close and close to the ultimate goal of traveling in my camper and photographing families and couples along during my own adventures with my family. There is a lot that goes into that type of business/lifestyle change so it will be a couple of years, in the meantime, I’ll be taking airplanes and traveling in my trusty car to get to all those hidden gems that I stumble upon.

I get so excited for new spaces and I can promise you that it will be a wild and worthwhile ride. Let’s connect?
